International think tank Carnegie Endowment will open a centre in India, a development which was today welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who expressed the hope that it will strengthen the country's strategic partnership with the US and other parts of the world.

Modi made his views known when a delegation led by William Burns, President of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace called on him here.

"The Prime Minister welcomed the Carnegie Endowment's initiative to open a centre in India stating that it was reflective of democratic traditions and liberal thinking in the country," a PMO statement said.

Modi expressed hope that the centre would further promote the climate of research in liberal arts, especially among the youth, in India and strengthen strategic partnership between India, the US and the rest of the world, it added.

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a global network of policy research centers in Russia, China, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

Its objective is to advance the cause of peace through analysis and development of fresh policy ideas and direct engagement and collaboration with decision-makers in government, business, and civil society.
