Cash worth Rs 7.40 cr seized by EC in Tamil Nadu

The election authorities in Tamil Nadu have so far seized money worth Rs 7.40 crore, in the run up to the May 16 assembly polls, with 73 cases related to alleged electoral offences been registered in the state.

Besides cash seizures, 151 rice bags, 4.5 kilos of ganja, 3,74,030 ml of Indian Made Foreign Liquor, 110 litres of arrack procured from neighbouring Puducherry were among the merchandise seized, an official release said here today.

Also, cases for violation of electoral rules have been registered against various political parties. Such cases include hoisting of party flags and putting up flex-banners without following rules.
 

Seizure of cash, goods and contraband were done across Tamil Nadu after the Model Code of Conduct came into force on March 4. Foreign currencies of seven countries, the value of which is not known were seized in Dharmapuri district.

While Static Surveillance Teams seized Rs 5.15 crore, Flying Squads have recovered Rs 2.25 crore worth of cash, it said.

Meanwhile, Madurai rural police said summons had been issued to 50 voters in Tiruparankunram assembly constituency for allegedly taking cash for votes, seeking their explanation.
