Central team to visit flood ravaged dists in Ker from tomorrow

A central team would tour various parts of Kerala from Friday to assess the damage caused by the recent devastating floods.

The 11-member inter-ministerial team, headed by Special Secretary of the Home Ministry, B R Sharma would be in the state till September 24, and undertake on-the-spot assessment of damage and additional requirement of funds, an official release said.

The state government had sent a memorandum seeking Rs 4,700 crore as compensation for the damage caused due to rains and floods, considered to be worst in a century.

Besides this, the government has also sought a comprehensive package to rebuild Kerala, which had suffered a damage estimated to be more than Rs 40,000 crore.

 

The team would visit 12 districts, that were badly affected in the recent flood mayhem, it said.

Additional Chief Secretary, P H Kurian, various district collectors would inform the team about the destruction caused in the floods, the worst in the last 100 years.

The team would also be holding talks with Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan on September 24 before returning to Delhi.

The Union government had released Rs 600 crore to Kerala as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (Rs 500 crore) and Home Minister Rajnath Singh (Rs 100 crore) during their visits to the state.

This was in addition to Rs 562.45 crore already made available in the State Disaster Relief Fund of Kerala.

Meanwhile, a cabinet sub committee which met here today, said families of 331 people who lost their lives in the floods, were given financial assistance till now.

The sub committee, chaired by Industries minister E P Jayarajan, decided to complete by September 29 the process of disbursing Rs 10,000 each to the affected.

So far, the amount has been handed over to 5.52 lakh people, another press release said.

At least 493 people have died in Kerala due to the rains and subsequent floods during the South West Monsoon.
