Telecom infrastructure major Indus Towers has decided to elevate its current Chief Operating Officer Bimal Dayal to the post of CEO from April 1, 2016.

Dayal will succeed B S Shantharaju, who retires on March 31, 2016, after an over six-year stint with the company.

"I am confident that under Bimal's leadership, the company will scale greater heights... He will leave behind a great legacy," Indus Towers Chairman Rakesh Bharti Mittal said in a statement.

Dayal has 28 years of industry experience, including stints with leading firms Ericsson, Qualcomm and Tata Telecom. He has also served as MD of Ericsson in Sri Lanka.

Indus is a joint venture between Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. Bharti Airtel, through its telecom infrastructure arm Bharti Infratel, and Vodafone India hold 42 per cent in Indus Towers and Idea Cellular 16 per cent.

"Bimal is very familiar with our values and culture at Indus. We have a lot more to do in India in next five years," Shantharaju told PTI.

Indus has presence in 15 major telecom circles of India and has achieved over 2,61,159 tenancies till date, a first in the telecom tower industry globally.

"I think our strategy is fairly clear and that is evolving fairly well. There will be many launches of 4G on our fresh towers," Dayal said.

Dayal holds a double Bachelor's degree in Engineering and Law and had pursued Advance Management Programme at the Harvard Business School.
