Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit today participated in the 'Raising Day' celebrations of the Coast Guard-Eastern Region here.
The coast guard here celebrates February 1 as its 'Raising Day' every year after beginning service with seven ships in 1978.
The service has now grown into a force with 62 aircrafts, 134 surface units, including 18 hovercrafts, an official release said.

As part of the celebrations, Purohit witnessed the sunset ceremony and participated in the traditional cake cutting event, it said.
Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee; Rear Admiral, Flag Officer Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Rajan Ravindran; Coast Guard Eastern Region, Commander, Rajan Bargotra were among those present.
Commemorating 41 years of service to the nation, the Coast Guard Eastern Region conducted various events in the city, including an inter-school painting and quiz competition, the release said.
A "Ship Open for School Children" has also been planned to be held on February 5 and 6, in which 950 students from various schools are expected to take part.
