A delegation of Congress leaders, comprising former Union ministers Ajay Maken, Jyotiraditya Scindia and R P N Singh, today met HRD Minister Smriti Irani and expressed concern related to safety of students of NIT Srinagar.

Irani is learnt to have assured the delegation that she would look into the issues raised by them.

"The delegation spoke to the minister about the concerns of parents and students about their safety on the campus and asked the minister to ensure that all are safe. It was also sought that FIR should be cancelled against students who had raised the National Flag on the campus," Singh said after the meeting.

He said the delegation also demanded that a judicial enquiry should be held and that faculty of the institute should be diverse.

Apart from the three former ministers, senior leader Pranab Jha was also a part of the delegation.

The NIT Srinagar campus had become tense after clashes between local and outstation students after Indian cricket team's defeat to West Indies in the World T20 semifinal.
