The Congress on Wednesday hit out at the BJP government over the reported import of 1,21,000 metric tonne of plastic waste and described it as a "monumental disaster".
More than 25 countries dumped 1,21,000 metric tonne of plastic waste in India after recycling companies "slyly" imported it, according to a report by an NGO.
"Importing 1,21,000 MT of plastic waste' is a monumental disaster by the BJP Government. To add salt to injury, 55,000 MT is being imported from our neighbours including Pakistan. Is PM listening?" Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.
According to the report by NGO Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Smriti Manch (PDUSM), 55,000 metric tonne of plastic waste was imported in India from Pakistan and Bangladesh for recycling purposes.
