Court awards Rs 1.80 crore to parents of accident victim

Press Trust of India Chennai

A compensation of Rs 1.80 crore has been awarded to the parents of a 29-year-old man who died in a road accident in Tamil Nadu in 2009.

L Selvakumar, a bachelor, who was working at the Barclays Bank in Germany, had come to Tamil Nadu on a holiday. He was killed when the car in which he was travelling was hit by a truck.

The Permanent Lok Adalat attached to the Madras High Court, while awarding the compensation, directed an insurance company to deposit the entire amount within four weeks directly to the bank accounts of the claimants.

His parents had moved the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal here following the incident and claimed a compensation of Rs two crore.

The insurer disputed the claim and the matter was posted before the Permanent Lok Adalat of the high court.

The settlement was reached before chief judge R Selvakumar.
