Press Trust of India New Delhi
CPI today welcomed the Supreme Court verdict commuting the death sentence of Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts and said this should pave the way for abolition of capital punishment.

"The Supreme Court judgment is positive. There has been an inordinate delay in justice delivery. They have already served imprisonment for such a long time of 22 years, which is more than the ordinary life imprisonment," party National Secretary D Raja said here.

He said the verdict should pave the way for abolishing capital punishment.

"Over 140 countries have abolished capital punishment. India, being the largest democracy and an ancient civilisation, should also do away with it," Raja said.
