The AAP government today announced a 45-day audit of water utility infrastructures of Delhi Jal Board which will include inspection of 14,000-km pipeline, house contamination, valves and underground reservoirs (UGRs), in a major move aimed at preventing leakage of potable water.

Announcing the 'Walk the Line' initiative, Water Minister Kapil Mishra said that after the audit is complete, the board will work to fix leakages in the pipelines within six months.

"800 junior engineers will scout the entire Delhi water network for leakage and contamination along with their staff of about 3,500 members with 4-5 members per team," he said.

DJB has received a mandate from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to ensure uninterrupted supply and provide potable water to every household by December 2017, Mishra said.

"Each engineer will submit daily reports of broken pipelines, household contamination, valves and UGRs and suggest engineering solutions for each kilometre under his/her jurisdiction within 45 days," he told reporters here.

"When we go to a developed city, people drink water directly from the tap," and to achieve that, "we need a water pipeline network that can provide safe and clean water to each household for consumption," he said.

During audit, the pipelines will be checked to see whether they need repair or replacement, Mishra said.

According to the minister, DJB has reached 268 colonies in one-and-a-half years and will add 3,500 kilometres of pipeline to the existing 14,000 kilometres to reach every household in Delhi by December 2017.
