Depression over Bay of Bengal to intensify to deep depression

A depression over Bay of Bengal would intensify into a deep depression and bring heavy rains under its influence as it crosses the Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Chennai by November 15, the regional weather office said today.

The depression, which formed over southwest and adjoining South east Bay of Bengal today around 5.30 am, moved westwards and lay centered at 8.30 AM about 650 km east-Southeast of Chennai and 680 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam, it said.

The system would move westwards for some more time and then west-northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression and cross north Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Chennai by the night of November 15 or Nov 16 morning, it said.
 

Heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rain (25cm or more) would begin over South coastal Andhra Pradesh, north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Nov 15, it said.

Squally winds with speeds reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph along south coastal Andhra Pradesh, north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast and 50-55 gusting to 60 kmph off south Tamil Nadu coast would commence from Friday, it added.

In the rainfall recorded at 8.30 AM today, Colachel (Kanyakumari) registered a high of 10 cm.
