Hundreds of doctors and medical college students here have collected more than Rs 12 lakh from the people by standing at traffic signals for the victims of the devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir.
"We have collected more than Rs 12 lakh between September 18 and 24 with the help of our 800 volunteers from the five city-based medical and dental colleges," Sabyasachi Shah (24), who participated in the drive organised by NGO Medical Service Centre, said.
The volunteers stood at various city intersections from 5 pm to 8 pm, he said.
"We are sending a team of around 40 doctors and para-medical staff to Jammu and Kashmir," he added.
Dr Chaitali Sheth (23), who collected funds on city roads, said, "Some of our colleagues had joined relief operations during the natural calamity in Uttarakhand last year and that was an inspiration for us."
She said there were a few people who questioned the attempt to help the people of Kashmir, but volunteers told them that their only motivation was humanity.
Dr Devanshi Sheth (23) said, "I was amazed when a labourer gave his entire one-day wages. Another person donated twice. We got more generous help from people like autorickshaw drivers and the so-called laymen".
