Egypt's Sisi in UAE for talks

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrived in the United Arab Emirates today for talks with top officials, state media said.

Sisi's visit comes 24 hours after the UAE brokered a meeting between Fayez al-Sarraj, head of Libya's UN-backed Government of National Accord, and military strongman Field Marshal Haftar who refuses to recognise the GNA.

State-run news agency WAM said Sisi was accompanied by Egypt's foreign and investment ministers on his two-day visit to the UAE, one of the main donors of Egypt's central bank.

Egypt has received more than USD 20 billion in aid from Gulf countries that supported the overthrow of Sisi's Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi.

The UAE alone last year pledged $5 billion to Egypt, which has been plagued by economic instability since the 2011 revolution that toppled longtime president Hosni Mubarak.

The UAE and Egypt are also joint allies of Haftar, whose forces control most of eastern Libya including its key oil ports.

Yesterday, Haftar and Sarraj met in Abu Dhabi for only the second time since the latter was named prime minister in late 2015, as diplomatic efforts intensify to ends years of chaos and conflict in their North African nation.
