Forest department officials today managed to revive a 50-year-old elephant, which was found lying unconcious in a maize farm on the outskirts.

Though the officials started providing medical care, presence of two elephants delayed the treatment.

Official sources said a herd of three elephants, including a calf, had entered the farm near Karadimadai last night.

The villagers noticed one female elephant lying unconscious in the farm and two other elephants moving around it, the sources said.

About 25 forest department officials along with a veterinarian rushed to the spot, but could not go near the ailing elephant due to the presence of the two elephants, they said.

Considering the situation, the department brought a tamed elephant, Pari from Chadivayal and managed to scare away the duo to the jungles. They also burst some crackers to achieve their objective.

After diagnosing that the pachyderm was dehydrated, forest officials gave it 25 vials of glucose and antibiotics, the sources said, adding, on reviving, the elephant moved to the nearby jungles.
