A special court has awarded five-and-a-half years rigorous imprisonment to a former Superintendent Engineer of Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board (MPEB) and his two sons in a 13-year-old disproportionate assets case.

Special Judge Usha Gedam sentenced former superintendent engineer at MPEB, Khargone, L N Yadav and his two sons Rakesh and Khushhal yesterday and also slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on each of them, Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta, Arun Mishra said today.

Lokayukta Police had submitted a charge sheet against them on March 9, 2004 after completing investigations following a raid at Yadav's residence on June 29, 2001.

Lokayukta sleuths had then recovered assets worth Rs one crore disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Lokayukta Police claimed that for the first time a court has considered the investment made by accused from money earned through corrupt means in the name of his two sons as "encouraging corruption" and, therefore, considered the sons as accused in the case under IPC Section 109.
