Three ice factories, two nursing homes and two shopping malls were sealed in this south Odisha city for allegedly functioning without licences.

Hygiene was not being maintained in the ice factories at Lanjipalli and Ankuli, while the one at Aska Road did not have any water source, said an official adding that these units were sealed yesterday.

"These factories have no food licence to manufacture ice," said Commissioner of Berhampur Municipal Corporation Manoj Mohanty.

Police complaints have been lodged against the owners of these units.

The two shopping malls at Satya Narayan Temple Road and Urban Bank Road were sealed for functioning from a building not approved by the authorities. There is no parking space.

The two nursing homes, also sealed yesterday, were functioning without licence and had violated the Clinical Establishment Act.

"We are now verifying the documents of the nursing homes to take further action," said Additional Medical Officer (medicine), Saroj Mishra.

The ice being produced in an unhygienic manner might become the cause of spread of various water-borne diseases, particularly jaundice, said health officer S Dash.

The factories supplied ice to different lassi stalls and softdrink shops.
