A boat tragedy was averted in Kerala today when fishermen rescued 32 passengers after their vessel started drifting towards the sea mouth while traversing a river in the district, police said.

The boat was traversing the Valapatnam river on its way to Mattur when its engine suffered a snag near Azheekal, they said.

Due to rough waters, the boat started drifting towards the sea mouth.

The fishermen immediately rushed to the area and evacuated the passengers. They brought them to the shore onboard their boats, the police said.

The snag-hit passenger boat was towed back to the shore, they added.
