Foot-and-mouth disease: Kerala bans TN cattle

Press Trust of India Theni (TN)
Kerala has imposed a ban on cattle brought by traders from Tamil Nadu in view of prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease in various parts of the state.

Animal Husbandary Department officials in Tamiul Nadu said lorries carrying the cattle were stopped at various border check posts, including those at Gudalur, Kumili and asked to return.

The Kerala government had issued a circular to the check-posts not to allow lorries carrying cattle from Tamil Nadu, they said today.

Cattle traders said they were taking the cattle only after they were certified to be free of the viral disease by the Veterinary doctors. Even then Kerala officials were stopping the lorries, they said.

They would stop carrying cattle to Kerala if they continued with this wrong attitude, Cattle Traders' Association Secretary C Jinnah said.
