Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker is in talks to join actor Johnny Depp in an open road crime thriller "Labyrinth", which revolves around the unsolved murders of rap legends Tupac Shakur and the Notorious BIG.

The 55-year-old star will play a journalist, who teams up with Depp's disgraced LAPD detective, who has been unable to solve the mysterious deaths of two of hip-hop's biggest stars, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Brad Furman is set to direct the crime drama from a Black List script by Christian Contreras, which he adapted from journalist Randall Sullivan's book "Labyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG", while Miriam Segal will produce the project.

Whitaker will next be seen in the first Star Wars stand-alone movie, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story".
