Puthia Tamizhagam leader K. Krishnaswamy today suggested to the Madras High court bench here the appointment of an independent monitoring committee under the supervision of the court to assess the loss caused by flood and accelerate relief work in Tuticorin district which was one among the worst-hit areas in Tamil Nadu. The Rehabilitation Commissioner, Chief Engineers of Higway and PWD, Electricity, Deputy Director of Medical service could be among the officials who would help the committee in rescue and rehabilitation work.
The committee should be formed at all the levels, he suggested.
He said the breaches of Korampallam tank which caused the flood should be plugged and all encroachment in Uppar river and tanks removed immediately. The roads should be repaired on a war footing.
Special revenue camps should be held to provide the students their lost community certificate, school certificate, ration card, Aadhar card etc, Krishnaswamy said. He demanded a compensation of Rs. Three lakh for those who lost their house and entire belongings and Rs.25,000 for those who lost their cattle.
The medical camps should be held in a permanent manner. Stating that water-logging upto four feet was prevalent in many places, he suggested installation of 30 motors of 100HP capacity to pump out the water.
The buckle canal should be desilted so that natural gradient was available for free flow of water, Krishnaswamy said.
He gave the suggestions for rehabilitation on the advice of the division bench of the Madras High court bench here comprising Justice V.Ramasubramanian and Justice N. Kirubakaran who heard his PIL seeking proper rehabilitation work in flood-affected areas of Tuticorin.
