Railways has earned Rs 29,690.16 crore from freight traffic during April-July this year as compared to Rs 27,515.90 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.9 per cent.
Railways carried 343 million tonnes (MT) of goods during April-July 2013 as compared to 327.02 MT during the same period last year, registering an increase of 4.89 per cent.
Out of the total earnings of Rs 6894.61 cr from goods traffic in July 2013, Rs 3023.64 cr came from transportation of 42.36 MT of coal, followed by Rs 625.98 cr from 9.97 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.

The national transporter earned Rs 564.47 cr from 7.98 MT of cement, Rs 539.66 cr from 4.34 MT of foodgrains, Rs 447.44 cr from 3.81 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 413.24 cr from 3.09 MT of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points.
It earned Rs 369.53 cr from 4.09 MT of fertilizers, Rs 112.12 cr from 1.38 MT of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 373.29 cr from 3.66 MT by container service and Rs 425.24 cr from 5.53 MT of other goods.
