Receiving flak from all corner for sanctioning Brazil junket for six of its legislators to watch the football World Cup, Goa government today asked State Chief Secretary to set criteria for foreign tours.

"There should be criteria so that we avoid wasteful expenditure. There should also be exposure for the ministers," Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told reporters here.

The instructions to set the criteria were issued to the chief secretary by the CM soon after a cabinet meeting here today.

In a related development, days after the Sports Department cancelled the state-funded trip of six legislators including three ministers, director of the department V M Prabhudesai was transferred to another department yesterday.

Parrikar, however, claimed that the transfer had nothing to do with the issue.

"There is no link of his transfer with the Brazil tour. He was shifted out because he was inefficient. The department was in chaos and I had asked him to sort out the mess," Parrikar said.

Parrikar said the department had purchased equipments worth Rs 7.5 crore without getting proper financial sanction.

"Prabhudesai had not spent the money. But I had asked him to sort out the mess, which he failed to do," he said.

Six legislators including State Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado and Power Minister Milind Naik, were supposed to fly to Brazil to watch the ongoing Football World Cup which would have cost the exchequer Rs 89 lakh.
