Gold smuggling case: Prime accused remanded till Oct. 1

A court here today remanded the prime accused in connection with the smuggling of 20kg of gold from Dubai to Kochi last week, to judicial custody till October 1.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate NV Raju passed the remand order when Fayaz was produced before him today.

The accused has submitted a written complaint to the Magistrate alleging of being tortured by a customs official in custody.

Meanwhile, Preventive officials today raided the house of Fayaz's friend and a Dubai-based businessman Ashraff at Thalassery.

Last week, they had seized 20kg of gold bars from two women passengers and their accomplice who arrived here from Dubai and arrested them.
 

Fayaz, who was arrested in New Delhi last week and brought here on Monday, reportedly revealed to customs officials of having connections with a former member of Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's personal staff. So far police have arrested four persons in this case.
