Government has decided to file a review petition against Supreme Court verdict scrapping NEET, a single-window examination for filling MBBS, BDS and post-graduation seats in medical colleges.
This was stated by Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on the legality of the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Examination.
"The Government is of the opinion that it would be in the larger interest of the society and students aspiring to study medicine to have NEET. Therefore it has decided to file a review petition against the majority judgement delivered by the
Supreme Court on 18.7.2013 in Christian Medical College, Vellore vs Union of India and Others," Azad said.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court by a two-to-one majority on July 18 had scrapped holding of NEET and held that Medical Council of India (MCI) is not empowered to prescribe all India medical entrance tests and the MCI notification was in violation of Articles 19, 25, 26, 29 and 30 of the Constitution.
