Gujarati actor Upendra Trivedi passes away, PM condoles death

Noted Gujarati stage and film actor Upendra Trivedi, also known as 'Abhinay Samrat', passed away in Mumbai today, his family members said.

He was 79.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on his demise.

"An inspiring personality who won hearts both on & off the screen. Sad to hear about Shri Upendra Trivedi's demise," he wrote on Twitter.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel as well as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Gujarat Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela condoled his death.

Trivedi belonged to Kukadia village near Idar town of Sabarkantha district of North Gujarat. Apart from acting in more than 40 plays and 100 Gujarati feature films, Trivedi was also active in politics.
 

He was the MLA of Bhiloda constituency of Arvalli district for three terms, including two consecutive terms. He also served as deputy speaker of the Gujarat Assembly between 2000 and 2002.

He entered politics by contesting and winning the Assembly election from Bhiloda seat of North Gujarat in 1985 on a Congress ticket.

He retained the seat in 1990. In 1998, he contested as an independent candidate from the same seat and won for the third time.
