Hero Cycles today said that it has bagged an order of 7.5 lakh bicycles from the West Bengal government, which will be distributed to students of class 9 to 12 in the state.

This the largest ever government order to any bicycle manufacturer, Hero Cycles said in a statement.

The company has decided to ramp up its production capacities to keep up with the demands from its current distribution network, as well as to fulfil the new order, it added.

"This clearly shows the confidence that the state government has bestowed upon us. This massive order is not only going to benefit Hero Cycles but also help various big and small vendors and suppliers to associate with the company," Hero Cycles Chairman & MD Pankaj Munjal said.

The state government had issued tenders for bicycles through the West Bengal Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development and Finance Corporation.

In order to provide a greener transport and eradicate illiteracy, the West Bengal government has taken an initiative to distribute bicycles to students from class 9 to 12.
