A Home Guard constable has been arrested here along with three others for allegedly robbing a newlywed couple of jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh and a luxury car in January this year, police said today.

Anwar Ali, Home Guard constable with Railway Police here, along with Salim, Javed and Iqbal, was arrested after exchange of firing with police near Pilakhar river yesterday, SP Umesh Kumar Singh said.

Jewellery worth lakhs, a luxury car, a huge cache of live cartridges, a pistol and a gun have been recovered from them, the SP said.

"The cache of cartridges recovered from them was so huge that they could have fought with the police for five hours," Singh said.

The four were part of a gang against whom cases of rioting, murder, attempt to murder, encounter with police and cases under the Arms Act and Goonda Act have been registered, he said.

Three other robbers managed to escape, he said.

Salim, a property dealer, is the kingpin of the gang. He had amassed huge movable and immovable properties by investing robbed wealth in his property business, he said.

Salim owns a bungalow in Chamradwa village here, besides showrooms, houses and plots, the SP said.

After the robbery, Rampur MLA and UP Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohammed Azam Khan had asked police to solve the case within 24 hours, failing which, the inspector-incharge of Bilaspur tehsil was transfered to Police Lines.
