An eminent nuclear power scientist today said there is still hope for setting up a nuclear power plant at Haripur despite West Bengal government opposing the project.
"Haripur project is not deleted from our scheme of things. We still have hopes," Srikumar Banerjee, former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, told reporters here when asked about the fate of the project.
The proposed 6,000 MW plant in Haripur ran into rough weather after the state government opposed it saying no place in the state was fit for such a project.
Banerjee who is at present working with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai said that people needed to be convinced about the efficacy of nuclear energy for peaceful uses like generating power.
For the 6000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, experts from different backgrounds were engaged for a positive public opinion on it, said Banerjee, who was in Kolkata to attend the 64th foundation day of CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute.
