Idol lifters get 3 years jail term

Four persons were today sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment by a court here for stealing seven bronze idols from a Lord Shiva temple at Thilaisthanam in Thanjavur district in 2010.

Chief Judicial Magistrate K.Purna Jaya Anand convicted Justin, Albrin Prabhu, Kasperraj and Divakar and awarded three years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each under IPC section 457 (house-breaking) and two years RI and a fine of Rs 2,000 each under section 380 (theft).

The sentences would run concurrently, he ordered.

According to prosecution, the four accused broke open the locks of the Irudhayapureeswarar temple on June 6, 2010 and took away seven idols, including that of Lord Nataraja and his consort Sivakamasundari.
