The nursing superintendent and his deputy at the Medical College and Hospital here have been transferred following the death of two newborn babies there last week due to overheating of a radiant warmer apparatus, hospital authorities said today.

West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy further said that the nurse on duty has also been suspended until further notice.

The head of the paediatric department was transferred along with a departmental colleague while three post-graduate trainees were suspended for a month for medical negligence.

Satpathy, meanwhile, declined to comment when asked if hospital authorities were mulling the payment of a financial compensation to the victims' families.

Two newborn babies, including a girl child, died allegedly due to overheating of a radiant warmer apparatus at the hospital last Friday following which a committee was formed to look into the matter.

The infants, who were put inside the apparatus because their body temperature was low at birth, were found to have succumbed to the heat.
