Jharkhand High Court was today informed that inmates of five central jails have ended their hunger strike, a day after it asked the state government to submit a report on steps being taken to end the stir.
Informing the division bench headed by Chief Justice R Banumathi, the government said there were 106 inmates, whose sentence has either been reduced or pardoned, in separate jails and assured quick decision on their release.
The report was submitted after the court yesterday took suo motu cognisance and issued notices to Jharkhand Home Secretary, Inspector General (Prison), Law and Justice Secretary and other officials asking them to submit a status report today.

The bench also asked information on the status of such inmates who have completed their prison terms and are waiting for release.
The high court notices came after about 1,500 inmates resorted to hunger strike in support of their charter of demands.
