Iraqi officials say a suicide attack on a security checkpoint north of the capital, Baghdad, has killed at least seven people.

A police officer says the suicide bomber set off his explosives-laden vest today at an Iraqi army checkpoint in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 kilometres north of Baghdad. He says four soldiers and three civilians were killed, while 16 others were wounded.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to release information.

No one immediately claimed the attack, but the Islamic State group, which controls a third of Iraq and Syria, has claimed several previous attacks targeting Iraqi security forces and the country's Shiite majority.
