Actress Margot Robbie says she is grateful that she got to play Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad" because it's "rare" that women play such "gritty" roles.

Robbie, 26, has spoken out amid claims her character is portrayed in a sexist way and hailed writer David Ayer for making the character for women, reported Female First.

Speaking on the pink carpet at the European premiere of " "Suicide Squad" at London's Odeon Leicester Square, she said, "It's so rare as an actress that you get given a role this messed up and gritty and funny.

"He didn't write it like a chick but he wrote it for a chick and I'm grateful. It's so rare that chicks get to play this role."

"Suicide Squad" is out in cinemas in the UK on August 5.
