A key nationalist ally of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today accused the main Tamil party TNA of trying to use its mandate received at the northern poll to challenge the national sovereignty.
"The TNA is looking to use their mandate received at the northern election to challenge the state and its sovereignty," Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Research and general secretary of the JHU or the Heritage Party said.
He charged that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) was foisting its separatist intent on Tamils.
They are exploiting the peaceful environment achieved by the government troops by defeating the LTTE's armed terrorist campaign, he said.
The TNA by winning 30 of the 38 seats on offer in the northern provincial council election held on Saturday have secured a three-fourth majority in a decisive vote.
Ranawaka said the government had been generous with the TNA as the government never ventured into taking political or legal action against the TNA for their role as the front to the LTTE.
"No where in the world that a political front of a terrorist organisation was allowed to act freely after defeating the terror group," Ranawaka stressed.
Ranawaka said the JHU would urge the TNA not to drive the Tamils yet again towards the jaws of LTTE's separatism.
"Our fear that TNA's victory in the north would end up in the revival of Tamil separatism has come true," he said.
