Judicial work in the Delhi High Court was today disrupted as lawyers abstained from work in protest against the Union Law Minister's assurance that the amended bill on enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts would be tabled in winter session of Parliament.
"Members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) abstained from work today in protest against the unilateral assurance given by the Union Law Minister to the District Court Bar Associations that the Delhi High Court Amendment Bill would be tabled in the current (winter) session of Parliament," advocate Abhijat, Honorary Secretary of DHCBA, said.
"The proposed amendment is irrational and is against the interest of the common litigant. DHCBA calls upon the government to heed to reason and not succumb to populism and politicize the issue for myopic electoral gains," a press release of the Association said..
It further said a delegation of the Executive Committee and other prominent members met Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay this evening and it was decided that a detailed representation would be given to him.
Upadhyay assured the delegation that he would forward the same to the Union Law Minister with the recommendation to the government to consider the same carefully.
He also assured the delegation that he would impress upon the Union Minister to grant an urgent hearing to DHCBA to fully understand the reasons for its opposition to the proposed enhancement of the civil pecuniary jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court and its ramifications, the release said.
The Association has also said that it would decide whether to continue the protest which may also include a march to Parliament, demonstrations and fresh calls for abstention from work.
