Efforts to pacify Gurudas Kamat, who had quit the Congress a fortnight ago, are likely to bear fruit soon and party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi have spoken to him over the issue.
A senior party leader, who declined to be identified, said Jairam Ramesh was in touch with Kamat who was "not happy" with the politics being played by Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam and AICC general secretary Mohan Prakash, who is in charge of party affairs in Maharashtra.
The leader said Sonia and Rahul had spoken to Kamat recently in a bid to pacify the senior leader.
Kamat has said that he has the "highest respect and regard" for Sonia and Rahul and his "resignation is purely on personal grounds".
On June 6, the 61-year-old Kamat had announced his decision to quit active politics, springing a surprise on the party. Kamat was AICC general secretary in charge of Gujarat and Rajasthan, a vacancy which has not been filled by the party so far.
His move comes ahead of next year's Mumbai civic elections, where Congress is hoping to dislodge the Shiv Sena-BJP combine.
Senior Congress leaders A K Antony and Ahmed Patel had also held separate meetings with him last week amid signals that a way out could be found soon.
