A two-year-old child, kidnapped from her house in Silchar in Assam for nearly a week, was rescued from Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya today, police said.

The girl was abandoned by kidnappers at a barber's shop and local people informed the police who took her into their safe custody, SP Spill Thamar said.

"Having gone through the description of the kidnapped girl, we found it matched and all formalities were followed," the SP said.

Trisha, daughter of Subhadeep Roy Choudhury and Satabisha Roy Choudhury who are teachers of the Assam University, was abducted from the residential campus of the varsity on June 5.

Police suspected their absconding maid for the abduction.
