Family members of a 22-year-old youth, who died in a road accident, have been awarded over Rs 13 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT Presiding Officer Harish Dudani directed IFFCO Tokio General Insurance Company Ltd, insurer of the dumper which caused the accident, to pay Rs 13,11,072 to the parents and four siblings of the victim.

The tribunal, while awarding the compensation, relied on testimony of eye witness Hira Lal, who was riding the scooter on which the victim was sitting pillion at the time of accident, and documents including FIR, post mortem report of the victim, mechanical inspection report of the vehicle etc. submitted by the family members.

"In view of testimony of eye witness and documents on record the negligence of driver of offending vehicle has been prima facie proved," it said.

According to the petition filed by victim's family members, on the intervening night of July 25-26, 2013, Raanu Sharma was sitting pillion on a scooter which was being driven by his employer.

When they reached near a petrol pump in Vasant Vihar here, a dumper being driven in a rash and negligent manner hit their scooter, as a result of which they fell down and Sharma died.

Sharma was taken to JPN Apex Trauma Centre, where he was declared dead on arrival, it said.

The parents of the victim approached the tribunal seeking a compensation of Rs 17 lakh.

During the proceedings, the driver and the insurance company claimed that the accident took place due to negligence of the scooter riders.
