The Calcutta High Court today asked Kolkata Municipal Corporation to file an affidavit explaining the rationale behind giving tax waiver for those painting their houses in blue and white, a favourite colour of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

During a hearing of a PIL against KMC's tax waiver scheme, a division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked the civic body to file an affidavit within two weeks on the rationale behind the scheme.

A decision by Trinamool Congress-run corporation to offer tax waiver for people who paint their houses in blue and white colours has earned brickbats from opposition parties.

Over the past three years in several parts of the city's state-owned buildings, small and big parks, bridges, road railings, boulevards, flyovers, traffic police booths as well as new taxis were given a sky blue and pristine white look.
