The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to implement data and information sharing of registered vehicles in the city and putting up of high quality road signages and markings to ease traffic woes here.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice A V Mohta directed the government and BMC to implement these two points mentioned in a report submitted by the High Power Committee, which was constituted as per court directions to come up with solutions for traffic problems.
Of over 81 suggestions made in the report, the High Court today directed implementation of two main points concerning sharing of data of registered vehicles between the RTO and Traffic police department and having prominent traffic signage including markings of zebra crossings.
The court has directed RTO to complete digitisation of data concerning registration and numbers of vehicles registered before 2006. The RTO has completed digitisation of vehicles registered post 2006.
The civic body has been directed to implement the suggestion of road signs and markings. The committee has suggested for clear high quality signs to be erected on all major corridors in the city.
The BMC has said that due to climatic conditions in Mumbai, density of traffic and enforcement issues like halting of vehicles beyond stop line, markings tend to fade faster than expected.
"The issue is referred to the IIT and University Department of Chemical Technology seeking improvement in quality of material and method of application," the committee report said.
The bench was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Bombay Bar Association seeking strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations. The matter has been kept for compliance on April 25.
