A man, allegedly in the possession of 70 gm heroin and three country-made pistols, has been arrested, the police said today.

Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha, was arrested last night, when his car was stopped by the police in the district. His accomplice, Surjit Singh, is on the run, Senior Superintendent of Police J Elanchezhian said.

A case under the provisions of the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against Sukha, he said.

Some criminal cases were already registered against Sukha in Jandiala and Rangar Nangal police stations, he said.

Sukha was a resident of Jaito Sarj village in Gurdaspur district, he said.

While patrolling in the area of Miani Road here, the police signalled a car to stop in which the two accused were travelling, Elanchezhian said.

"Instead of stopping the car, the driver tried to take a U-turn, but failed. On seeing the police coming towards him, he ran into the sugarcane fields and escaped under the cover of darkness," he said.

The police succeeded in arresting Sukhdev.

Seventy gram heroin, three country-made pistols and some magazines were seized.

During preliminary interrogation, Sukha revealed that he along with other accused Singh used to supply heroin and country-made weapons to criminals in the area.

The SSP said that he will be produced before a court here for police remand.
