Thiyagaraja Maheswaran, 42, the only Tamil lawmaker from the main opposition UNP was shot dead on January 1, 2008 here while he was attending a 'pooja'.
High Court judge Sunil Rajapaksa today awarded death sentence to the convict, Christopher Valentine.
The accused was injured when Maheswaran's bodyguards fired at him, and arrested.
Maheswaran was the Colombo District United National Party (UNP) legislator and former Hindu Affairs Minister, when he was assassinated.
