A 50-year-old man was today hurled to death by an elephant at Salboni in West Midnapore district of West Bengal.

The man, Rasik Tudu, who had gone out of his home at Dangasole village encountered a herd of 70 elephants, including nine calves. He was hurled to the ground by one of the pachyderms, forest department officials said.

Tudu died on the spot, they said.

Divisional Forest Officer V Salimat said since Odisha and Jharkhand were not allowing the elephants to return to their habitats, the animals were turning violent and attacking people in the adjoining Bengal districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.

"We are trying to tackle the situation. We will inform the central government," he added.
