MCZMA asks BMC report on Thackeray's makeshift memorial

Press Trust of India Mumbai

The move comes four days after lawyer Abha Singh, wife of IPS-turned-lawyer Y P Singh, complained to the authority that Coastal Regulation Zone notification, 2011, has been violated with the coming up of the temporary structure at Shivaji Park.

The CRZ Notification, 2011 says that in order to protect and preserve the 'green lung' of Greater Mumbai, all open spaces, parks, gardens, play grounds as indicated in development plans within CRZ-II, shall be categorised as CRZ-III, that is 'No Development Zone'.

"Shivaji Park has been categorised as Park," the lawyer claimed.

The authority, which is the statutory body to take action on violations of CRZ Notification, 2011, has asked the BMC to submit a comprehensive report in the matter of construction of Thackeray memorial at the sprawling ground, Singh said.

When contacted, civic body chief Sitaram Kunte confirmed receipt of the MCZMA letter.

In her complaint, the Singh had requested the authority to issue directions under section 5 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 to stop these activities at once, to remove the unauthorised structure, fix accountability and to prosecute the violators under the provisions of section 15 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
