An Assam-based United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) operative and his aide were arrested today from Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district and their plan for executing a major blast was foiled, the police said.

"We have arrested an 18 year-old ULFA cadre Babul Rabha from Chandmari deputed by the ULFA to aid the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in a major blast here," district SP Mukesh Singh told PTI.

He said Rabha was to be provided with materials for executing the blast by the GNLA.

Acting on a tip off, special police teams apprehended Rabha from Chandmari area of Tura. He was involved in carrying out a blast in Krishnai recently, Singh said.

Based on Rabha's inputs, another militant Trening M Sangma was arrested from Purakhasia village, near Dalu in West Garo Hills, the police said.

Soon after the duo's arrest, a search was conducted inside the busy Tura Super Market by the police and only two out of the seven entry and exit points were opened for public.

Meanwhile, an operative of the ASAK militant outfit, which is active in the Garo Hills region, today surrendered at Dalu police station with a 7.65 pistol and five live rounds.

Sengkham R Marak deserted the parent GNLA in 2011 and joined the ASAK and was made the outfit's commander of Khasi Hills, the police added.
