A 30-year-old man, reportedly suffering from some mental illness, went berserk and allegedly axed three persons to death in Hingane-Dehere village in the district today, police said.

Six persons sustained injuries in the incident when axe-wielding Ravindra Bagul started attacking passersby randomly in the morning hours triggering panic, a Nandgaon police station official said.

The deceased are identified as Keshav Bagul, Subhash Bachhav and Vijay Pawar, he said, adding that the injured persons were admitted in a state-run hospital in Nandgaon.

He said Bagul was eventually overpowered and arrested.

Police are investigating whether Bagul was really having any mental issues and whether he was on any medication.
