The army and Assam police arrested the leader of the militant outfit Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT) and seized a huge quantity of M16 ammunition during a joint operation in Karbi Anglong district, said a senior police official today.
The rebel was identified as Sing Timung alias Binong Timung alias Songriso Tungjang who was the acting chairman of the outfit when its chairman Donri Kramsa was in jail, the district superintendent of police Siva Prasad Ganjala here.
The Army's 12 Gorkha Rifles and police from Dokmoka jointly searched the courtyard of Timung's uncle's house at Belughat yesterday and found 301 bullets of M16 ammunition, Ganjala said.
A case has been registered in Dokmoka police station under the Arms Act, the SP said.
The KPLT is dedicated to forming an autonomous Karbi State out of Assam.
