MIlitants apprehended in Assam

Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers 'chairman' and eight other militants of the insurgent outfit were apprehended during a joint police and CRPF operation in central Assam's Karbi Anglong district last night, a police officer said today.

A joint operation was launched by the 23rd India Reserve Battalion - Assam Police and CRPF 210 Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) personnel led by Sub Divisional Police Officer, Bokajan, on specific input about the presence of KPLT cadres in the jungle areas in between Mouzadar Basti and Langmili village, Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta told PTI.

The security forces apprehended eight KPLT extremists, including its self-style chairman Sarmung alias Welson Timung, and recovered some firearms and ammunition along with documents of the extremist group, Mahanta said.
 

The other cadres were identified as Ruve Hanse alias Boi, Kensing Engti alias Kanghon, Ebrison Hanse alias Papu Hanse, Jacob Kiling alias Pajir, Diganta Tisso alias Langchor, Rajiv Terang alias Kloklar, Hun Tokbi and Karbi Tokbi.

The recoveries include one HK 33 rifle, one 303 rifle, one 9 mm pistol, one .32 pistol and one 16 bore cartridge, the SP added.

Earlier on July 29, three KPLT militants, including an operational commander and also Sergeant Major of the Unified Command of KPLT and United People's Liberation Force (UPLF), were killed in an encounter and a training camp of the group was busted in the district by a joint team of Army and Assam police.

Recently the commander-in-chief of the outfit involved in extortion and kidnappings had surrendered before the security forces, he added.
