An eleven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man at Polba about 54 km from Kolkata in Hooghly district today, police said.
The girl was returning home from school when Kallu Singh, a tea stall owner who was in an inebriated state allegedly grabbed her and raped her, they said.
Some people found the girl lying profusely bleeding. She has been admitted to a hospital in a serious condition, they said.
Hearing the news local people barged into the tea stall of Kallu Singh and also the liquor den where he was drinking and ransacked both. They also demonstrated demanding that Singh should be arrested immediately.
Superintendent of Police of Hooghly Sunil Chowdury said Kallu Singh has been arrested by police after a complaint was lodged.
The girl is the daughter of a daily wage labourer.
