In the wake of complaints of oil mixing with ground water in some colonies in a north Chennai locality following leakage in pipelines, Union Environment Ministry today said it would order closure of faulty pipelines of oil companies.
"Officials of Central Pollution Control Board and the Ministry are undertaking a study in over 400 homes in the area where the incident was reported. After getting the report in a day or two, I will take necessary action," Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters here at the airport.
Her comments come in the backdrop of residents of a few colonies in Thondiarpet complaining about oil mixing with the ground water.
"I think, I will be in a situation to order for the closure of the faulty pipelines," she said.
A few months ago, Natarajan had conducted a review meeting with top officials of the oil marketing companies in Chennai to take stock of such oil leakages and related accidents in Tamil Nadu.
She had warned that her Ministry would take action against oil marketing companies for such leaks for the safety of human lives and the environment.
